Short thought here. If the NCAA doesn't want to pay players, they should at least offer a pension to players, a USAA-style access to health care, and maybe other entitlements.
The ideal solution overall, I think, is to bring an end to the professionalization of college athletics. Create a football D-league or something. I suppose a higher goal is to end the reliance of American kids on college; to minimize the need for this expensive four-year indoctrination-by-debt accreditation as a prerequisite for the workforce. But if we're going to have colleges, and we're going to have beloved football teams, there's no reason they need to be as overtly professional as they are. There should be higher academic standards, or at least something closer to the way high school athletes need more than just on-field performance.
