I attended a blockchain party tonight and met a bunch of people. They were all cool and chill, but there was definitely a lot of marketing going on and probably a lot of hucksterism. One notable moment was when some foreign guy with an unplaceable blockchain accent said, "All the blockchain events have the best views!" We were in the middle of Times Square, looking directly at the H&M sign. In that moment I realized, these people fully expect to be rich for the rest of their lives, starting right now. They're so completely sure that they've stumbled onto something no one else knows about, this is theirs for the taking. They are the oligarchs of crypto.
Kind of depressing that this sector matriculated through the idealistic young phase of openness in record time, and has already moved to open profiteering.
