There's a scene in Atlas Shrugged in which a deadly train crash precipitates from a string of characters shirking their responsibilities out of fear of being held accountable. One of Ayn Rand's main themes in the book is that removing accountability from the equation leads people to get lazy and terrifieed?
Reality could not have countered that dumbass theory harder this week. Two separate Boeing 737 Max-8 planes crashed in other parts of the world, and it has come out that the FAA actually was pretty derelict in its safety assessment of the new planes. They were actually discovered to have delegated responsibility for some of the investigation to Boeing itself, a result of budget cuts contained in the recent FAA re-authorization bill.
As is always the case, reality turns against the theory that free markets and austerity is the surest route to safety.
