8.24.18 - The Dainty Mobster

This NYT article is a fun throwback to what is often mythologized as a golden version of New York history, as resurrected by Donald Trump's casual remark about how he's seen a lot of people "flip" over the years. Thus confirming that he used to hang out with a lot of criminal people. Hard to imagine Mitt Romney casually talking about how much flipping he's witnessed.

But there's a difference between being a shady dealer who had to work with the Roy Cohns of the world, and being able to make it in the mafia. In the actual outfit Donald Trump would have gotten whacked so goddamn long ago. You need to be loyal, quiet, and at least a little bit competent. He's basically Morrie from Goodfellas and probably would have met the same fate.

Mueller took down John Gotti and now he's in the process with Donald Trump. The comparisons pretty much end there.

P.S. This reminds me of one of the best descriptions I've seen of Trump's mannerisms, by the Atlantic's James Parker, who described it as "dainty mobster."
